PRIMARY AND ADVANCED CERTIFICATE IN REBT WITH CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

The Primary Certificate in Rational Emotive and Cognitive Behavior Therapy with Children and Adolescents is an intensive training program that introduces participants to the principles and practices of RE& CBT as they apply to children, adolescents, and parents.  The first lecture is an overview of RE&CBT so that participants who have not had the primary certificate program in RE&CBT will learn about the theory and those who have had that training will get a good review.  Day 2 uses the ABC model as a framework for describing specific ways to adapt it for young clients using developmentally-appropriate strategies.  Day 3 is applications with parents, including information on parenting styles, irrational beliefs that interfere with effective parenting, and positive parenting practices.  Day 4 includes developmentally-appropriate and creative interventions for selected internalizing and externalizing disorders (anxiety, depression, perfectionism; anger, acting out, procrastination) typically presented by children and adolescents.  There will be live and video demonstrations so that participants can see how to use the theory with this population.  The training consists of 12 hours of lecture and 12 hours of group supervision where participants learn how to "do" REBT.

The Advanced Certificate in Rational Emotive and Cognitive Behavior Therapy with Children and Adolescents provides more advanced training in the principles and practices of RE&CBT with children and adolescents. Participants MUST have completed the Primary Certificate in RE&CBT with Children and Adolescents. There will be 14 hours of lecture and 12 hours of supervision.  Topics include: developmentally-appropriate strategies for dealing with reluctant and resistant young clients, examples of age-appropriate homework assignments, developmentally-appropriate disputing techniques, and creative interventions for helping children and adolescents develop effective new thoughts and feelings--the "E" in the ABC model.  Other topics include applications to typical externalizing disorders such as ADHD, frustration intolerance, and bullying, as well as typical internalizing disorders such as self-acceptance, grief, and stress.  The last lecture addresses consultation with parents and teachers and more specific cognitive, emotive and behavioral techniques they can use with children and adolescents to enhance their well-being.  12 hours of group supervision is part of this practicum where participants build on the skills developed in the Primary Child and Adolescent training.

These trainings are very informative as well as practical, with an emphasis on skill development.  Many specific techniques will be described and demonstrated so that participants will enhance their skills in counseling young clients using RE&CBT. The primary certificate in RE&CBT is NOT required to be eligible to take the primary in Child and Adolescent RE&CBT.
